Pierre-Henri & Victoire: Marquetry

Wood marquetry maker Pierre-Henri Beyssac based in France & French fellow Victoire Camus

Pierre-Henri discovered marquetry while studying cabinetmaking at the École Boulle in Paris. After working for a few years in France, Italy, and the Réunion Island, Pierre-Henri ran the marquetry workshop of the École Boulle from 2011 to 2016. Today, he mixes woodwork with other materials such as mother of pearl, parchment, horn and gilding.

With a history of art degree gained in Paris, Victoire is interested by heritage, art and creation. For her collaboration is an essential element for her professional development.

Memento

This large paper marquetry artwork is composed of small squares of recycled paper. The marquetry in these squares represents the natural hieroglyphs found in wood grain. Similar to symbols in scripture, this alphabet embodies the language of wood and its identity. Visible on both sides of the artwork, the symbols are gilded with gold leaf on one side and created in coloured paper on the other. Master marquetry artisan Pierre-Henri and fellow Victoire wanted to capture the elegance of Art Deco through a geometric and angular composition.
