Stian & Marianne: Woodworking

Woodworker Stian Korntved Ruud based in Norway & Norwegian fellow Marianne Bain

After studying product design in Oslo, Stian decided to dedicate himself to his passion for making, and has since exhibited his work all around the world. He is now focusing on natural materials and enforced properties, designing and making both functional and purely aesthetic objects.

Marianne recently finished studying woodworking at Møbelsnekkerskolen in Oslo. Her admiration for sustainable restoration, quality design and craftsmanship, lead her to change from management roles within the music and theatre industry to becoming a craftswoman.

Bird Houses

Norwegian woodworking duo Stian and Marianne were inspired by the architectural geometry of the Art Deco period, along with the 1927 Fritz Lang film Metropolis – whose imagery and themes were in turn strongly influenced by Art Deco – to create this set of five bird houses and feeders. These structures are crafted from responsibly-sourced wood from Oslo Botanical Garden, primarily offcuts created during essential park maintenance. Some of the bird houses are designed to hang from the ceiling, while others are intended to be wall mounted.
