Oliver & Ash: Puppetry

Puppet maker Oliver Hymans based in the UK & British fellow Ash Appadu
Oliver is an award-winning puppetry artist and director from London. He has worked internationally across four continents, directing and designing puppetry in theatre, opera, film, circus and music video.
Ash is a designer and puppet maker who has been passionately focused on puppet making for the last two years. Soon after graduating in fine art, they began their journey as an intern at the prestigious Little Angel Theatre where they debuted their first children’s puppet show.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Inspired by Goethe’s famous poem, puppetry master Oliver and fellow Ash created two stringed marionette puppets. The Apprentice was made using traditional techniques, while the Broom puppet reflects contemporary methods. Working together in London, the duo first drafted the figures in 2D on paper before transferring the designs onto blocks of lime wood. The wood was then roughed out, carved, jointed, finished, painted and stringed. Additional materials included wire, nylon string, leather, oil paint, linseed oil and beeswax.
