Célia & Erica: Tapestry weaving

Tapestry weaver Célia Esteves based in Portugal & Portuguese fellow Erica Monteiro

In Porto, Célia runs a rug making studio called GUR with a fellow weaver, Claudia Vilas Boas. Together they seek to modernise traditional Portuguese handloom weaving, by collaborating with artists to create new designs for rugs while still using traditional wooden weaving looms.

Erica recently completed a master’s degree in industrial and product design. She likes to research and experiment, getting involved in every stage of the creative process. She has a special interest in sustainability and a desire to incorporate bio-inspired design into her work.

Crafted from recycled cotton rags, thread and warp of cotton, wool top and metallic embroidery thread, these two hanging rugs were handwoven using the traditional Portuguese taffeta technique. The design, colours and textures take inspiration from the intricate decorative details on the Casa de Serralves in Porto, a symbol of Portugal’s Art Deco legacy.
