Klara Pil & Coline: Basket weaving

Basket weaver Klara Pil based in Norway & French fellow Coline Bouquin

Klara’s practise revolves principally around teaching baket weaving in a dedicated 3-year programme.

She also participates in exhibitions and produces baskets and creations for interior decoration, suchn as willow installations for restaurants, cafes, and museums.

After a master’s degree in philosophy and a short course at a fine art school in France, Coline turned to craft. She enjoys vegetal weaving, particularly the link between vegetal fibres, water and her hands.

The Gathering Basket

This asymmetric basket with multiple handles may seem like a functional object but is in fact intended as a sculpture.  Basketry master Klara Pil and fellow Coline gathered strips of different types of willow which they wove together into an asymmetric form, with some repetitive elements reflecting the patterns used during the Art Deco period. The sculpture expresses two beliefs that are core to the duo’s craft: that basketweaving can also weave links between people, and that organic fibres can be a durable and beautiful alternative to manmade materials.
