Cecile & Karla: Textile creation

Textile creator Cecile Feilchenfeldt based in France & German fellow Karla Huff
Swiss textile designer Cecile has worked in Paris for over 20 years where she runs a small studio developing knitted fabrics for haute couture fashion houses. She learned knitting from her grandmother when she was young and specialised in woven materials at the Zurich University of the Arts.
As an aspiring knitwear designer, Karla is passionate about bringing two-dimensional surfaces to life through the craft of textile construction. She draws inspiration from her dual Croatian-German upbringing. With a background in multidisciplinary design, she offers a distinctive perspective to her craft.
Light Knit
This lighting installation, created by master textile artisan Cecile and fellow Karla, comprises several standing lamps, each with a different base and textile covering. Using semi-automatic domestic knitting machines and thin Lycra yarn, Cecile and Karla engineered flexible and highly elastic 3D ‘pockets’. They then used transparent or semi-transparent 4cm-diameter pastilles (sequins without a hole) to stretch out the pockets, making them translucent. The repetitive geometric pattern created by the sequins gives a flavour of Art Deco.
