Laurine & Emma: Felting

Master felt maker Laurine Malengreau based in France & French fellow Emma Fardeau
Belgian craftswoman Laurine lives in Aubusson and is strongly influenced by the region’s heritage of tapestry making. Laurine creates large-scale wall hangings from silk and wool using the Nuno Silk technique which she learned from her Spanish master 15 years ago.
Passionate about hands-on activities since early childhood, Emma studied applied art, design, and textile crafts at École Européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne. She has recently completed a master’s specialising in eco-responsible, ethical, prospective and innovative textile design.
Les Nébuleuses
This triptych of felted artworks is composed of two wall-mounted ‘paintings’ and one floating sculpture, made using the rare Nuno silk felting technique. Through the use of colour, gold and light, each of the three pieces interprets a different moment in the construction of iconic Art Deco skyscrapers such as New York’s Empire State Building: workers on the scaffolding at night; daytime activity as the skyscrapers near completion; and the sun’s rays lighting up the finished building. The result is a unique triptych in which vital energy, inky night and luminosity respond to each other.
