Maria & Ella: Weaving

Weaver Maria Stavropoulou based in Greece & Norwegian fellow Ella Solberg

During Maria’s first degree specialising in textile conservation, she studied historic woven, kneaded and embroidered pieces, which led her to discover different traditional Greek techniques of weaving on a small frame loom. At Chelsea College of Art & Design and interning with the Greek master artisan Ismini Samanidou, Maria specialised in hand weaving.

Ella studied textiles at Designskolen Kolding. When she moved to Denmark her passion for textiles grew. In recent years she has become more curious about weaving and loves to work with different colours, yarn and techniques.

Moirai / Norns

This collection of three hanging lampshades blends the artistry of weaving with the intricate techniques of double cloth. Master weaver Maria and fellow Ella worked together in Maria’s Athens workshop to create the lampshades from mercerised cotton, sisal, gold rayon and recycled Greek cotton. The final pieces capture the radiant golden hues of the natural light in Athens. The collection’s title honours the Moirai (Greek) and the Norns (Norse), mythological deities that weave the threads of fate. The lampshades connect these ancient narratives with the craftmanship of weaving.
